Leeds hotel review : The Met

January 9th, 2010

So its about time for another review here as i know its been a while since i checked in with some good budget travel news for Leeds. I suppose most of you are not thinking about booking your next holiday at the moment if you are snowed in or you are using your computer mainly for heat. On a side note i hear alot of the airports in the north of England are closed at the moment or otherwise delayed. This is bound to cause a lot of problems for people who have booked hotels for this January period and i suppose there could be a lot of cancelations too. Its an interesting point as i know most hotels will still charge you the full amount if you cancel less than 3 days before you arrive. Still these things do happen and there’s really nothing you can do about the freak weather at the moment.

Still there’s an upside to everything and because less people are travelling at the moment there are some really great cheap hotels in Leeds available at the moment that just before Christmas would have been out of most people’s price range. So with this in mind i decided to do a review of a pretty nice 4 star Leeds hotel that is situated right in the centre of the city. The hotel is called the Met and this is a really luxurious hotel that is also a grade 2 listed building. However don’t think that it is some old decrepit building as they have recently spent over 6.5 million pounds refurbishing the whole place. The hotel has over 110 rooms which are finished to a very high standard (as you would expect from a AA attested 4 star hotel). They also have a very large function and events space capable of catering to over 240 people at a time. So as you can guess this hotel is very popular with business people and anyone who is looking to host an event in style. I must also mention that this hotel has a wedding licence so it means you can get married on the premises. Now i know some people just have to get married in a church but for others they are looking for something different and this ornate building right in the centre of this great city could be a fantastic choice.

Being right in the heart of things the hotel also has great travel links. It is only a short walk to the main Leeds train station and also just a short drive from Leeds airport. Being right in the city centre has many other benefits too. For start you are going to save on travel expenses like taxis to the main attractions as you are so close already. For example great shopping districts like the Victoria Quarter are only a short walk away. There are a lot of great shops here where you can get many cheap and discount items like Marks and Spencer and Topshop. Ok so i must remember to talk a little about the hotel! I could ramble on about Leeds all day and why you should come visit us but if you have reached this blog then you have probably already decided you want to come you just need the right hotel (at the right price). Prices will depend on when you book but you can expect to pay between £70 and £80 for a standard double room. To some this may not be the super budget hotel they are looking for but when you consider that rooms here can go for as much as £149 per night i think there are some great savings here.

So there you have it, my first review in a while but hopefully it was worth the wait. Again ill mention that this type of hotel (a hotel not necessarily on the budget side) may not be for everyone but i do want to cater to as many different tastes as possible. Also give the great number of hotels we have in Leeds from budget to luxury it would be a shame to just focus on the cheap hotels. Also who says some luxury cant be cheap too? Until next time, stay tuned.

Book off peak in Leeds for great deals

February 14th, 2009

Its important to think about the dates you want to book your holiday on very carefully. Many people don’t realise just how big the price gap between off peak and busy times can be. For example nearly everyone knows that hotels in Leeds and other major cities become more expensive when the school holidays are in full flow. However you might not know that the day of the week that you book also has a big impact on the final price of your room. Booking on a Sunday to Wednesday for example could be as much as 40% cheaper than at the start of the weekend. Since most people can book off whatever dates they want from their employer it makes sense to take on board this saving if you can.

Another advantage of booking at off peak times is that many of the main attractions in Leeds will be much less crowded and you will find it easier to get off peak discounts. As always you should always have a look around hotel reception for any new or discounted events that may be taking place during your stay. Remember to ask staff at the hotel also as they will often have local knowledge about the city and should have a good idea on the best things to see and do.

Where are the cheap hotels at?

February 12th, 2009

Picking cheap hotels anywhere can be quite difficult anywhere but i suppose it is always more difficult when you don’t know the city you are going to. Leeds is a great city but the choice of hotels can often make it quite difficult for visitors to decide on a hotel that best suits their needs. Alot of people these days want to splash out on a luxury hotel in the hopes they can enjoy their even more. One thing to think about when going for a very expensive hotel is how much time you are going to spend there. Ie if you are away most of the time is there really any point in spending hundreds of pounds on a hotel room where you may only stay for a few hours?

I suppose this is why most young people these days spend as little as possible on a hotel as they hope to be away both at night and during the day experiencing all the city has to offer. However i have found that with the older generation they really appreciate their home comforts much more and for them the little extras such as great service and hotel facilities like restaurants etc are much more important. I have also noticed that people of an older generation can prefer a hotel further away from the city centre as it is more likely to have a quit atmosphere and a more easy going nature.

People do ask me all the time what the best way to find cheap hotels in Leeds is but the thing is it really all depends on what requirements you have and what things you count as an essential part of your stay and i suppose what things you are prepared to give up.

What to look for in a hotel

January 24th, 2009

The biggest mistake that most people make when they book a hotel is not thinking about the actual requirement that they have for their stay. For example you could find that you are paying for services and amenities that you are never going to use. Often a hotel may have expensive facilities like a gym or even a swimming pool included in the booking price however if you don’t make use of these parts of the hotel then you are essentially wasting money and increasing the price of your stay for no reason. Another thing to consider is the location of the hotel in relation to the centre of the city. The price difference between hotels in the centre of any city and those on the outskirts can be quite astounding when you look into it (sometimes as much as 50%).
